Sandwiched between the conspiracy of the chief priests and the teachers of the law (Mark 14:1) and the treachery of a disciple (Mark 14:10), is an act of love toward Jesus, which was complimented by Jesus as a “beautiful thing” (Mark 14:6), the act of Mary breaking an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume and anointing Jesus as an act of honor. The people around called this act a waste (Mark 14:4), and they even offered a different idea with a seemingly better return on the investment. But Jesus called this act beautiful. What a contrast! What Jesus calls beautiful, the world calls waste. The opposite is also true: What the world calls beautiful, Jesus sees as waste. You have a choice to make. Who are you seeking to please? I encourage you to live for an audience of one — the only one who really matters. I am sure there were plenty of alternative uses for the perfume that day. There are many great things to do with your life, your time, your talent, and your treasure. But the best thing is when you sacrifice these things for Jesus. Remember, good is the enemy of the best! Beware of “good” things that prevent you from giving your best for Jesus. This is your time to do something beautiful for Jesus!
