About a week ago, I stumbled upon an assignment prepared by my nephew 14 years ago when he was in second grade. He wrote about David Livingstone, “I and most of all, he was a missionary hero who gave his life for Africa.” Another Scottish missionary, John Anderson, who as the fulfillment of a God-given vision established the college where I studied and taught, came to India and began his labors as a missionary of Christ with firm faith in God and in the power of His Word and Spirit. The last line of the text inscribed on his tombstone is, “Preach the Gospel to every creature.” Many men and women of God around the world endured grim situations and suffering beyond description while birthing missionary movements that changed the world. The cause of Christ was so noble and the people so dear to them that they willingly let go of life itself for the sake of the Gospel. The Church is to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all people and make disciples. The Apostle Paul continually strove to reach “the regions beyond.” And now, God is calling you and me to go, young and energetic or old and decrepit though we may be, and greatly expand our efforts to end Gospel poverty.
