Words play an important role in the life of any society. Apart from being a means of communication between two or more parties, they also establish authority and provide clarity in times of confusion. In the Yoruba culture dominant in southwestern Nigeria, there is a saying: “enu agba l’obi ti n gbo,” meaning “The kola nut * ripens better in the mouth of the elders.” Whenever there is a serious dispute, people look to their elders to help them reach a consensus. What a wonderful privilege we have as children of God to have a Father and King whose Word is forever settled in the heavens! Unlike human leaders whose words or judgments are fallible, God’s word is perfect, reliable, and endures forever. Whatever He has promised you, He will bring to pass. However, if He has judged your case, thank Him because you cannot get a better judgment elsewhere. God loves you and has special promises for you in His Word. As you intentionally read, study, meditate, and act on His Word daily, you become a part of the wonderful things He is doing on Earth! The kola nut is the caffeine-containing fruit of the kola tree, and symbolizes consensus.
