Here in this passage, we have the two disciples of Jesus walking, and obviously, they were very sad and devastated. No doubt they witnessed the crucifixion of their Master. And now they’ve heard that the tomb of Jesus is empty. It has been a series of unwelcome events for them in the last 72 hours. And while walking on the road to Emmaus from Jerusalem, which is about six miles, Jesus suddenly appeared and joined them in conversation — only they didn’t recognize Him! What was assumed to be the saddest event in Jerusalem turned out to be the most glorious event in all of history. In these days of terror, panic attacks, and hopelessness caused by pandemics, war, climate crises, devastating floods, typhoons, and landslides — tensions, fears, and anxieties rise. Unless our hope is anchored in the fact that Jesus is alive and He reigns, we will quickly lose hope. We have to trust Him. If we will always go back to the Scriptures when we are in the midst of turmoil, we will always find the courage to face tomorrow because He lives.
