These words were spoken by Jesus, who demonstrated for us His confidence that Almighty God is the only one who has the power and authority to kill anything and thus determines the final state of that thing. We live in a world where many people are afraid to speak out on issues; are afraid of governments and those in authority; are afraid to call sin by its name; and are afraid of losing friends, a job, their status in society, or even their lives. However, Jesus was frank in declaring He was not afraid of those who can kill the body and are not able to do anything else after that. He was prophetically speaking of His impending physical death on the cross and the fact that He was not afraid to die. It was for this very reason that He came. Jesus was confident the death of His body was just a temporary state of being. Nothing else could have been done by man to keep Him in that state. Men might be able to kill many things in our lives, such as our dreams, loved ones, career opportunities, or even our hope. However, no one can kill our soul. Let us remain confident that “this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison” (2 Cor. 4:17).
