Mapagkumbaba is the Filipino word for humble. More than just an outer expression of humility or modesty, mapagkumbaba echoes a gentle demeanor, a deeper authentic heart position devoid of vanity and self-focus. A leader who is mapagkumbaba or humble has no room to edge God out. Grounded on God’s truth, he does not demand applause or overexert to win it. The humble leader points to Jesus, not himself. How does one become mapagkumbaba? John 3:30 captures the path of purging pride: We decrease by adopting a posture of worship. When we worship, we think of ourselves less and magnify Christ more. When we are richly filled by grace, we lose our appetite for applause. We serve with quiet joy. And we shine the light on the light Himself. Brothers and sisters, may we ever decrease that others may experience Christ’s glorious increase through us
