“C.W. Vanderbergh wrote, “To love the whole world for me is no chore. My only real problem is my neighbor next door.” Love for other people finds its true source only on the basis of a prior love of God. Love is our inner commitment to God that is expressed in all our conduct and relationships. The Apostle Paul prays for the Philippians, who expressed their love for Him in many ways: “that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment” (Phil. 1:9). Knowledge tells us who to love, and discernment tells us how to love. When love is controlled by both of these virtues, it fulfills the highest goals of God and man. Who is “the neighbor next door” who is waiting to see God’s love through you?
