Why should Jesus appear to Mary Magdalene first? I can see two strong scriptural bases for it. Firstly, Magdalene had experienced mercies of Jesus when He cast seven demons out of her. Since then, she was following Jesus fervently by reciprocating the love of Jesus. She was there in Golgotha too. She had experienced that God’s “lovingkindness is better than life” (Ps. 63:3 NKJV). Secondly, it is her steadfastness in seeking Jesus; John in his Gospel (20:1-18), has narrated Mary Magdalene’s determination to go to the tomb while it was dark and stayed on there. Peter and John had gone back but Mary Magdalene did not give up until she found Jesus. In spite of all the risks involved, she was seeking Jesus. Jesus’ promise, “Seek and you shall find” was fulfilled in Mary Magdalene’s life on the day of resurrection. Not only that, but Jesus also gave her the privilege of declaring that He was alive to the disciples and others. She is the first to see the risen LORD and to receive the commission from Jesus to declare His resurrection and ascension. How much are we seeking Jesus? You who seek God, your hearts shall live (Ps. 69:32).
