As a child I was afraid of the dark and its terrors. Growing up, I realized sinful deeds are best carried out in the dark, hidden from sight. That’s why a crime committed in broad daylight is even more heinous. People avoid the light because what is to be done is evil and shameful and needs the cover of darkness. Afraid of being seen, Nicodemus approached Jesus at night and received some of the greatest truths and teachings. After explaining the love of God in John 3:16, Jesus reminds Nicodemus that those choosing the paths of sin prefer darkness to light. This is a subtle reference to Nicodemus, who came in the dark. When next seen in the Gospels, Nicodemus goes with Joseph of Arimathea to claim the body of Jesus for burial. He has seen the light, is going to do a true deed, and is therefore not afraid of being seen. He is not ashamed anymore.
