Confucius was once asked, “Is there one word which may serve as a rule of practice for all one’s life?” He answered, “Is not reciprocity such a word? What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.” I live in a culture where fault-finding and criticism is almost considered one’s birthright. Faultfinding and criticism are practiced freely within society and even in the church. The command not to judge and condemn refers to faultfinding and criticism. God prefers to act in mercy, but he who wants to put another on trial invites God to put him on trial; he who condemns another for his failings invites God to condemn him for his own failings. However, this command should not be misunderstood as prohibiting constructive criticism and assistance. Remember, the very essence of Christian conduct consists not of refraining from bad things, but in actively doing good things. Luke states the Golden Rule in 6:31, “And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.”
