The Pharisees received a direct accusation from Jesus after observing their lifestyles in close quarters. Today after over 2,000 years, does this question haunt us in a world where injustice rules the streets and we are more capable than ever of separating ourselves from the poor and oppressed? The Pharisees wanted rules to follow and boxes to check. They wanted religion. But God calls us into relationship with Himself, and that relationship will always inspire us to reach out to others. Many of us believe God is concerned about how much money we give, how many times a week we attend church, or if we follow all the rules. But the greatest commandment is to love God and love neighbor (Matt. 22:36-40). May we learn this lesson and pursue God’s version of holiness!
