A key part of competitive athletics is training. A runner would never show up to a race without months of training beforehand. Without preparation, injury will occur. Similarly, we must be prepared for when our Jesus returns. Luke places an emphasis on the vitality of time. When he says to stay dressed for action and keep our lamps burning, it means that he wants us to always be ready for the Lord. In ancient times the people wore a long, loose robe as an outer garment, making it impossible to run or work. To be ready for action, they would gird up or tie it up to help them to move easily. We also ought to be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast. In those days a wedding would go on for many days, and the servant wouldn’t know when his master would return. He had to be ready at all times to open the door for the master. While waiting for our Master, we ought to build our faith by keeping our eyes fixed on Him. Being ready does not mean waiting without doing anything — it means to wait with a twinkle in the eye with the expectation He will return.
