This is the most famous verse in the Bible! Let’s take a closer look at these words: so, gave, whoever, believes, perish, and eternal. The word “so” means extremely, infinitely, and intentionally and is placed in the verse to signify God’s lavish generosity. “Gave” means to contribute generously and reminds us that God expects us to be givers rather than takers. “Whoever” signifies choice and free will, reminding us that God does not want robots, but people who have chosen Him because of His great love. “Believes” encourages us to be like Abraham, who believed in the Lord and so God credited that belief as righteousness. “Perish” reminds us that God does not want anyone to be destroyed, but that all should come to repentance. “Eternal” life with God is timeless and infinite.
