Jesus’ teaching in the first part of this verse tells us about faithfulness in little things. The word “faithful” can also be translated as “trustworthy.” In the second part of the verse, Jesus speaks to us about honesty and trustworthiness. Depending on the translation, we can also find the word “integrity.” All of these words describe a person who walks uprightly before God. The way we carry out a small task is the best demonstration of whether we are qualified to take on something larger. God wants us to have integrity in small jobs, to see if He can give us bigger jobs and responsibilities. Usually, these tasks are things we don’t like to do: be it at home, at work, and even at a church service. As Christians we all need to be tested and found trustworthy in all aspects of our lives and in all tasks, even the simplest, so God can place in our hands more complex tasks of greater relevance. If we can prove ourselves trustworthy in these simple things, God will reward us with bigger and, surely, more pleasant tasks. Let’s think: Are we trustworthy? Are we upright in each of our responsibilities?
