Humans are born into a dark world full of pain, injustice, and suffering. We stumble around in the dark, using power, pleasure, wealth, and security like flashlights, thinking they will rescue us from the terrifying, endless night. We fight over them. There is never enough light for everyone. But Jesus — He doesn’t offer a flashlight. He leads us out into the sun. All those little lights we clung to in the dark are useless in that kind of brightness. We can live without fear. We don’t have to fight — there is plenty to go around. We can confidently laugh, sing, play, work, give, parent, and even suffer in peace, because we know the God of the universe has the world in His hands. Do you have this kind of light? Jesus promises whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness anymore. Let’s put down our flashlights and go out into the sun.
