I find this a truly comforting caution and command. This verse tells us how much Jesus knows us and cares for us. The first thing that becomes clear from this verse is that no one is exempt from failure. We see later in the chapter how Peter learned this difficult lesson. The apostle Paul warns, “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Cor. 10:12). Jesus knew Peter was not yet on firm ground! It is so comforting to know that Jesus knew what was going to happen in Peter’s life, and He had already interceded for Him so Peter would not be lost. Peter denied Jesus three times, but he realized his mistake and turned back to Him. In keeping with Jesus’ instruction to him, Peter becomes the rock on which the church is built, strengthening his brethren wherever he went. I like the certainty with which Jesus tells Peter “and when you have turned back,” not “and if you turn back.” Jesus knew Peter would not be lost. It’s the same in our lives. Jesus knows our every weakness, and He plans ahead and prays for us to stay strong.
